I don’t recommend to do squats at home, especially if you are a beginner. Some people think I say so because when you do them with a barbell halfway into the movement you might find out you can’t let go of it or, if you do them with dumbbells, that you could lose your balance.
But these dangers of doing squats wrong are just the obvious ones and there is one much sneakier: wearing out the discs of your spine and causing damage that can take you out of lifting weights for months or even forever. And you won’t know that you cause this wear onto your spine until you feel the numbness, pain or loss of strength. And at that point it’s too late – you may have a herniated or bulging disc.
